For garden lighting, the IP code indicates how the housing protects against the ingress of solid objects and water. This helps with choosing an outdoor model, but the code alone does not tell you whether a lamp can be used in every location in the garden.
What do the two numbers mean?
The first digit describes protection against access to dangerous parts and the ingress of solid objects. At 6, the enclosure is dustproof. The second digit describes protection against water under certain test conditions.
An X means that no protection rating has been specified for that position. It is not the same as a tested value of 0. Compare both figures and read the application in the product data sheet.
Compared with IP44, IP65, IP67 and IP68
| IP code | Protection in outline | Important when choosing |
|---|---|---|
| IP44 | For fixed objects of 1 mm and larger and splash water | Check if the manufacturer allows the product for your outdoor space |
| IP65 | Dustproof and protected against water jets | No consent for immersion |
| IP67 | Dustproof and protected during temporary immersion under test conditions | No general permission for permanent use underwater |
| IP68 | Dustproof and protected when immersed under specified conditions | Check, among other things, depth, duration, and intended use |
Do not treat the water ratings as an unlimited, increasing guarantee. A product that only has IP67 or IP68 is not automatically tested for the jets that are included with IP65 or IP66. If both types of protection are required, then make sure that both are explicitly specified. Do not use a high-pressure cleaner unless it is explicitly permitted.
Which IP value do you choose for your garden?
Look at the actual load: splash water under a canopy, sprinkler water next to a border, or water that can remain around a ground light fixture. There is no IP rating that suits every outdoor installation.
IP44 products can also be intended for outdoor use by the manufacturer. Conversely, an IP65 product is not automatically suitable for being placed in wet soil. Check with the manufacturer. garden lighting Always the mounting method, environment and permitted application.
Example: a lamp under the canopy
A wall lamp hangs under a roof edge, but can still get wet in the wind. The cable runs to a connection closer to the ground. Evaluate these two places separately: the lamp can be hung relatively sheltered, while the connection actually has to cope with splashes or sprinkler water.
Note where water can actually come from and check the permitted application for each component. Simply taking the number on the lamp for the entire installation is not enough. Have the connection carried out in a suitable location and according to its own assembly requirements.
Example: a spot next to the border sprayer
First, check that the sprinkler is directed directly at the fixture. Then, check what water pressure the manufacturer allows. A submergence rating does not automatically answer the question of whether a directed water jet is allowed. Move or direct the sprinkler differently when necessary for an appropriate setup.
Also look at the soil after rain or spraying. Water that remains around a ground light for a long time is a different situation than short-term splash water on a wall lamp. Choose the version based on those actual conditions and the product specifications.
Special attention to groundspots and connections
With ground lights, drainage, the ground and mechanical load are taken into account. A high IP rating does not tell you whether you can drive over the spot. Read also What to look for when placing ground lights.
The connection must also be suitable. An IP68 connector is not necessarily suitable for every cable diameter, ground mounting, or unlimited immersion. Follow the requirements for clamps, seals, and the sealing of unused openings.
Will the protection remain after installation?
Install the product in the prescribed position and prevent damage to the seals. Have fixed electrical connections carried out by a qualified installer. See for preparation Installing garden lighting.
Check later for damage, loose parts and water accumulation. The IP code is not a general guarantee against aging, corrosion or any weather influences. For a must cable, the lamps and connections string lights must fit together; read where you pay attention when you watch a string lights movie.
Which data do you check before purchasing?
- Application: Is the product intended for wall, ceiling, floor or use under water?
- Water taxation: Which test or restriction is associated with the specified protection level?
- Assembly: Are there fixed directions, built-in loops, or special conditions for the cable entry?
- Complete connection: Do the cable diameter, connector and seal fit together and at the spot?
- Surroundings: Are there any additional requirements for things like corrosion, temperature, or traffic load?
Keep the data sheet of the exact execution. Check the setup again when the situation changes, for example after new paving or relocation of a sprinkler. A previous appropriate choice remains appropriate only if the circumstances and installation remain the same.
