Is your TL bulb constantly flickering or is it difficult to start up? Possible causes include a worn bulb, a defective starter, or a problem with the ballast or connections. Which method of control is appropriate depends on the type of lighting: classic TL with starter, TL with electronic ballast, or an LED bulb.
Is it an LED bulb or an incandescent bulb?
First, check the label on the tube and the available information about the fixture. Note the type and length. Two tubes that look similar don’t necessarily work the same way electrically.
- TL with conventional power supply device: Many of these fixtures come with a separate starter.
- TL with electronic circuit breaker: This system generally does not have a separate replaceable starter.
- Led tube: The permitted power supply differs per model. Some work with a suitable pre-connect device, others with mains voltage according to their own installation specifications.
Recognizing a worn-out TL bulb or starter
Dark discoloration at the ends of a fluorescent tube can indicate wear. It is not a conclusive diagnosis: other components can also cause start problems. In the case of a fixture with a loose starter, an unsuitable or defective starter can play a role.
Use only replacement parts that match the fixture and the lamp type. A conventional TL starter and a LED starter are not necessarily interchangeable. If the fixture does not have a separate starter, then ‘replacing the starter’ is not a suitable first step.
What can you check before replacing something?
- Note whether the flashing occurs only when the device is turned on or also during use.
- Check whether the problem is related to one tube or several lights at the same time.
- Look for the type of tube and the manual for the fixture.
- Switch off the power and let the tube cool down before replacing a user-replaceable lamp according to the manual. Use a stable work surface and avoid pressing on the glass.
Do not open the electrical connection section for testing. If the problem persists with suitable replacement parts, or if you see damage or notice smoke, remove the fixture and have a technician inspect it.
Can you replace the TL bulb with an LED one?
Yes, if the chosen LED tube fits the fixture and the power supply method. In an EM version, a corresponding LED starter may be required. In an HF version, the electronic pre-connect device must be on the compatibility list of the tube. A direct mains-powered version may require adjustment of the fixture; have that done by a skilled installer.
Length and fitting alone are therefore not enough. Check out the LED TL tubes with the data from your current fixture attached. If the fixture is worn or damaged, a complete replacement may be required. LED TL fixture a more suitable solution.
Is that a regular LED bulb?
A LED light in an ordinary fitting requires a different diagnosis than a fluorescent tube. For more information, read here Why does a LED light flicker without a dimmer?. This prevents you from applying an LED solution to another system.
